Locals First Housing - Up for a Vote on May 5, 2026
The Santa Barbara County Board of Supervisors just took a major step toward keeping housing accessible for the people who actually live and work here. They approved a new housing marketing program requiring developers to prioritize local residents and workers, including commuters and those displaced by no-fault evictions, for a full 12 weeks before opening units to outside buyers or renters. This is a concrete effort to make sure new housing goes to the community it's built in rather than outside investors or newcomers with no local ties. Contact your Board of Supervisors representative today and urge them to finalize and fully implement this program so that the people who make the South Coast and Santa Ynez Valley run can actually afford to stay here.

Affordable Housing Options - Up for a Vote on May 5, 2026
For the first time in over a decade, Santa Barbara County is updating its inclusionary housing law and the changes could meaningfully expand affordable housing options for local workers and families. The update allows developers to build affordable units on a separate nearby site, unlocking new tax credit financing and making it financially feasible to deliver 100% affordable projects. It also ensures that priority for new affordable units goes to people who already live or work in the area. Just as importantly, the county committed to working with nonprofits like Habitat for Humanity to build smarter partnerships that keep homes affordable for local families long-term. Urge your Board of Supervisors representative to give this update their final approval and push for the strongest possible nonprofit partnership provisions because building affordable housing here is hard, and we need every tool available to make it happen.
